People get concerned about global warming. I think more deeply. I think all the life in the universe will die. It will. So what's the true value of life, is there any?

I like these threads. I like how vibrant they are. I like how you don't know what's going to happen each day. That excites me. It's like being at a party or something. Cool you know.

Anyway if I want to post I will, providing I'm allowed.

I've come to the conclusion that neither the soul nor the self exists. That all that's real is natural forces and natural materials subject to causality.

I also hold that because this is true there is no true evil nor good. A river that gives water to drink isn't good and a river that drowns isn't evil.

Also because of this, that good and evil don't exist, beauty can only be a pattern.

That's true when you think about it objectively. A rose is beautiful and a sunset. Neither is in any way particularly good or evil.

Truth can be known through consciousness but the awareness of suffering doesn't make us care.

What makes us care is the composition of our brains. The chemicals and receptors that are involved.

The other primates that weren't so naturally loving didn't work together and died out.

The anthropic principle applies. We can see that we love because we triumphed. So in a way it's true that love conquers all.

I do have an unusual view of the world, though it's a view shared by Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. I hold it to be true that free will does not exist. Without free will everything suddenly is one and there's nothing to hate, no true evil, it's just nature you know.

Tom....you're an atheist & you justify it by believing that freewill does not exist. I totally understand....it's a (3+) millenium's old justification.

And BTW, you're talking altruistic to a San Andreas fault. Everyone has some hate & so everyone is capable of evil. We're humans....we're emotional.

Do you notice that you're eloquently disproving that FW doesn't exist w/ your last sentence. I mean you've walked yourself right into it.

3 paragraphs. The first that I'm justifying being an atheists.

Actually before I respond I just want to say what a pleasure it is to know you. People like you make this experienced worthwhile to me.

Well Ghostess I think that it's one of two I admit this reality thing. God's in charge or nature is. I think the third option that it's we human beings that are in charge is silly.

I'll respond to your other two.

The second paragraph is really interesting. It's true I agree that we human beings hate at time. Naturally. I guess I just find when we are mindful and living in the moment we return to our natural relaxed state and we naturally love. It's what we human beings do. We got the chemicals you know!

The third. Well once you've accepted that everything is nature you don't actually feel hate for anyone. I don't. I do accept however that from time to time someone drives me crazy and I momentarily hate.

Ghostess I really do appreciate that view point and I'm not going to attack you and say you're wrong.

I guess I feel that it's two different things we are talking about.

There is the idea that life is unfair and people are evil that makes us hate. That idea is false.

Then there are natural tribulations within the day that affect us and cause us to hate naturally.

I'd say hate has its place in terms of anger can be useful in a conflict. It energises us.

Hate exists within nature.

there is a saying to understand everything is to hate nothing and I think that's true. I think it's probably also true that to understand everything is to love nothing too. I think that way about the nature of reality really now. The world just exists. It's a pattern and nothing more. It just is.

I sure think they were great points though. I'm sorry I called you sexy!

Thinking about it let's look at a river and think about what's been said. I think that can be useful
Avatar of tomtrytostay
That sounds about insane but I think it can be useful to get outside of the I delusion.

Okay so when a river kills our loved one we don't hate the river. We don't. We understand it's a natural force affecting a natural material. As the river is drowning our loved one we might momentarily feel and think I hate rivers! Like I say an energising thought.

Look at afterwards though. Or before.

We don't hate or love a river for what it truly is. Nature is not a separate being, good nor evil.

But guys, when we see the sun beautifully melting into a clear blue river we genuinely love that river.

Love is about beauty and beauty is about a pattern.
Avatar of tomtrytostay
I guess perhaps if it's true that love is about a beautiful pattern then hate is about a grotesque pattern.

I love the sound of violins playing Beethoven , I hate the sound of machines on a building site.

Love, hate, patterns .
