A very generalized way of looking at it:
The easiest way to get from one end of the board to the other is to go through the center. Whoever controls the center has a checkpoint that can deny passage to their opponent.

If I control the center, pawns of e4 and d4 how do I use my advantage? Sometimes my opponent strikes out with c5 and I lose my pawn center:( Also what do I do with more space?
