A few queries towards the end of the variation though: 
I didn't often see 5.g4 when peopel used to try this against me. 

8. Ne2 seems counterintuitive, even against novice players who would much more likely just try and threaten the bishop (f3) right? 

It does seem like your counter relies on this, but it's nice to see you're aware of traps, and good to practice refuting them :)

Instead of playing 5. g4, white might play 5. Nc3, which results to a counterattack against the checkmating move (5-9). My friend frequently does this, and I get checkmated with that move. What should I do?
