It's understandable though because when science becomes so heavily theory-laden that lay people don't understand it, they can be forgiven for suspecting that perhaps some of the scientists don't understand it either. I know I can be forgiven for thinking that, because I know it's true. Even if such cases are exceptional, there are many cases where scientists disagree so fundamentally that one side or the other may be assumed to be wrong.
