I think smug is about the people, not about the sport. It is very difficult to me establish that. About chess, no doubt about it is a sport. I have my PC upstairs so every time i come to move i run upstairs and after run downstairs. Definitively it makes chess a sport! :P
THE SMUG AWARD GOS TO?

Golfers always seem to have a smug sense of superiority. Most of the movers and shakers in the business world golf. Maybe their smugness comes from rubbing shoulders with wealthy elites.

Agree. Not to mention lifting a horse, or smashing a bishop.

Hilarious !!!
I needed to laugh
now what did you think of the sport forum vote outcome? I was surprised at the answer on the readers poll ?
PS: If you shower inbetween those stops it would mean.........
1- you moved the chess pieces
2- Ran/Climbed the up and down course ( falling up/down counts Tryst will agree)
3- Then you were in the water/shower too
Ta Da !! This would make chess part of a TRIATHALON EVENT !!!!

could make it a decathalon. horses are involved (equestrian), jump some steps (long jump), horses and water (water polo).....what do you call a 5alon?

i have not idea about that, but i pick whatever option if that makes you happy. i agree electric pawn about golfers, but golf is not in the option list :(((

I too agree that smugness is more an individual trait that can be attributed to a certain group. Painting with a wide brush leaves a mess. I do find it interesting that these were all individual sports and not team sports. Perhaps it is related to the competitive nature - that to be the best you have to be "better than" that some feel you can be 'better than' by bringing those around you down instead of purely on your own merit and achievement. Then again, perhaps it could be that those with that type of personality (must be better than in a relative frame of reference as opposed to absolute) are attracted to sports/competition as a way to demonstrate/feed their ego?

I didnt notice no team sports thats interesting too....I was still surprised by the winner

yeah i noticed that too mezmer. its mostly in individual achievement even in team sports. barry bonds, terrell owens, ocho cinco, troy aikman, michael jordan to name a few. maybe they need the attention to achieve greatness.

and vote

ok MsJean, i did as you demand, my vote was for skiing, the third most voted. i really didnt know about road cycling smugglers

No way am I voting on Steal-My-Identity-Book. But, I wouldn't be surprised if road cyclists are waaaaaay up there in the smug-o-meter. Tell someone you did 125 miles, they'll shoot back with a "casual" oh, I did 130 with hills. So much one-upsmanship disguised as friendly banter.
At some point, Ms. Jean, please let us in on the smuggest! :)
of course
Which one takes the smug cake?
Most people who love sports are welcoming, compassionate, and open. Still every sport has its share of snottily superior %$#$#%. We’re not talking about douchebags whose DNA makes them annoying 24/7 or enthusiasts who passionately argue whether snow turns to powder at 4, 5, or 6 percent water content, but the haughtily patronizing snobs who look down their noses at other sports and even their fellows in adventure.
Every discipline has them, every discipline.
