i spent way too long writing this
What's the best way to get comments?
The way controversial opinions garner comments is by having new arguments spring up alongside the original argument so that everyone will always be trying to disprove each other.

Yeah, and it doesn't hurt to mention Bobby Fischer. Maybe you could create a thread asking if Bobby Fischer believed in global warming/climate change. (Kills two birds with one stone...)
If we look at the threads on the front page of OTF, most of them are word games with a few thousand comments. As with all things, this is a gamble, but one of the safest.
One of the ways to get comments is the age old, "The last person to comment", which encourages commenting in order to a get a reward of some sort. These are not as popular as a word game, but can get a few hundred to a few thousand.
The "heated" forum game is a relatively new game that takes after the last person to comment style, and encourages bumping and commenting and a level of fanatical devotion to keeping your points.
We also have the spamming threads but we don't talk about those.
Amas are not bound to reach the levels of success the others will, being dependent on your popularity rather than other factors.
You can also state an opinion so controversial that people seeing it have no choice but to argue in defense or against the claim stated. This can either award you thousands of comments or a warning from a moderator.
Occasional other threads will reach the hundreds but rarely more than 2000.
