I realy like D. J. MacHale's Pendragon series. If you pay close enough attention you can see something close to a philosophical text while still reading a fast-paced page-turner. Other than that, I'd have to go with Plato's The Republic but since you wanted a series, that's out of the question.

Hunger Games isn't that long.
The longest harry Potter was 800 pages. Ironically it was also the most boring. In my opinion the 4th was the best.
