It doesn't appear that the site is going to do that. It's a double standard, but that's what I'd expect of Chess.com.

I really hope they do. It would be insane to condemn Russia but not condemn Hamas and Iran. Chess.com didn't respond immediately on the Ukraine War, so my hope is that they're just a bit delayed responding to this, but there is a response pending. My hope is that they at least remove the Palestinian flag, especially since Palestine isn't an actual country. I doubt there's even a Palestinian Chess Federation or anything.

I also haven't seen chess.com condemn Israel for 60 years illegal occupation of the West Bank with all the associated arrests, civil rights violations, property seizures, etc so perhaps they're just being neutral.

It’s not like they were decapitating babies though.

#4, I think they include all the flags of countries that some don't consider countries to try and be in the least amount of hot water.

I suppose that makes sense. Are there any countries which officially recognize Palestine as a nation, though? If there are some that give it that official diplomatic recognition, then it would make sense for chess.com to have the flag. If not, then it still seems odd to me.

#14, I don't think any country recognizes Catalonia.

I guess looking at the list, it does have places like Catalonia and Hong Kong, which is definitely an interesting choice, which does make having Palestine as an option less offensive. You make fair points.

I do still think that the atrocities that are being perpetrated right now do give plenty of reason to remove the flag, given the precedent already set with the Russian flag.

Absolutely agree with post 5 👍…..Israël should get out of the West Bank , it belongs to the Palestinian people , and not to Israel Government gangsters . 😤

Well, it’s not like Israel has been super innocent all these years, you know? 🤷‍♂️
Each side has done atrocious things to the other. (And over what, basically? Preferring different books?)

But do you know the kinds of things that Hamas is doing? President Biden gave a speech yesterday, and I’ll post part of it here.

“More than 1,000 civilians slaughtered — not just killed, slaughtered — in Israel. Among them, at least 14 American citizens killed.

Parents butchered using their bodies to try to protect their children.

Stomach-turning reports of being — babies being killed.

Entire families slain.

Young people massacred while attending a musical festival to celebrate peace — to celebrate peace.

Women r@ped, assaulted, paraded as trophies.

Families hid their fear for hours and hours, desperately trying to keep their children quiet to avoid drawing attention.

And thousands of wounded, alive but carrying with them the bullet holes and the shrapnel wounds and the memory of what they endured.

You all know these traumas never go away.

There are still so many families desperately waiting to hear the fate of their loved ones, not knowing if they’re alive or dead or hostages.

Infants in their mothers’ arms, grandparents in wheelchairs, Holocaust survivors abducted and held hostage — hostages whom Hamas has now threatened to execute in violation of every code of human morality.

It’s abhorrent.

The brutality of Hamas — this bloodthirstiness — brings to mind the worst — the worst rampages of ISIS.

This is terrorism.”
