Why is Country Required?

Why?
When you set up your own chess website, you can choose what details you require from people who wish to sign up. You can leave country out if you wish. You can even add some other interesting fields like "favourite food", or "best 1980's TV series".
In the meantime, chess.com will ask for details it feels are pertinent. Maybe they can use these details to attract advertising, maybe so that they can target paid membership to certain countries, or maybe so that they can simply colour-in a big map on a wall.
Whatever the reason, you have a choice. If you dont want to answer the question, then don't join.
When you are updating profile information, username, email, occupation ect., you must put what country you live in, it is required information, why? I really see absolutely no point to it.
