why lichess > chess.com

Let me make a confession. I no longer play chess on this site (except for daily games or playing with friends). I have completely switched to lichess (I still swing by for clubs + the occasional forum post, but not as much as I used to). This is not a goodbye post, since I’m obviously still here and plan to be, but it is a comparison post. Lichess is much better than chess.com. On Lichess, there is zero adds, and everything is 100% free. Not free for one week, but completely free. There aren’t any web trackers, either; lichess is a non-profit organization, so they don’t need to collect your data. On chess.com, on the other hand, I am bombarded by ads everywhere I go. I only get one free lesson a week, and, like, three puzzles a day. I simply can’t improve at chess at this rate. If I want unlimited puzzles or lessons, I need to pay between 50-100 dollars a year (if I remember correctly). I can’t even have a custom image as my background with paying for it (I think).
Now, don’t get me wrong, chess.com still has its benefits. For example, it has a larger player base, and a higher social aspect. Anyway, this is just a short comparison. Which one do you think is better?

Some people like yourself have written in to the forum over the years complaining about the few dollars it costs to buy a membership here.   Meanwhile, they have played thousands of games and spent thousands of  hours playing here.

I always thought it was worth spending at least $29 a year to help support a site where I spend hours every day.   The things they have added like Game Review are truly instructional.  Puzzle Rush is very entertaining and mildly instructional.

You have only played 400 games here in the three months you have been a member.  If it isn't worth $4.00 a month to avoid the ads interrupting each one of those games, it's your choice.

Bulliedofthesite

Might be worth a look

I’d have to admit that it may indeed be worth the money, but there isn’t really a point to spending the money. Lichess has most of the stuff chess.com has, with some exclusions.
Puzzles? Lichess has them
Game Review? Lichess has it
Lessons? Lichess has it
Again, I’m not trying to be overly critical of chess.com, but it’s not really up to $100 a year for chess.com’s features. It’s more like up to $100 a year JUST for the stuff that lichess doesn’t have. That isn’t really much of a value. The “it should be worth it” argument doesn’t really work, since it isn’t worth it just to spend money unnecessarily.
I admit, even if you count the years I’ve been here without an account, it’s still a lot less than others, so I’m not really an expert.

I agree with beskarmando, because they also have 3+ Check with bots and other modes exclusive to Lichess.

Inb4thelock.

Wait is this gonna be locked?
Rabbit
Nope. It’s just us expressing our opinions.
beskarmando
Agreed. Lichess’ having bots with variants is also a major plus.
As to the locking allegations:
No, unless this thread gets out of hand, the mods can’t lock it, since we aren’t breaking any rules. There is no rule that says you can’t discuss competitors of chess.com.
TheBestBeer_Root

How about FFA? Does Lichess have it?

beskarmando
I’m not entirely sure.
TheBestBeer_Root

I’ve played there but that was over an year ago

As for which website is superior, I suppose that is debatable. Just as you prefer Lichess, many other people prefer Chess.com.
I've had diamond membership for a while, and I'm confident in saying it's worth the money.

SacrificeTheHorse

Some years ago the mere mention of a rival site in the forums would have led to an instant lock. So that's something.

TheBestBeer_Root

agree there

Chess.com is great at UX, but then you have to pay for everything. To play without thinking for bullet, chess.com is much better

All the rest, lichess crushes chess.com.
Analysis are much better, cheater detection, variants, and all for free

Since you've only played bullet, and have played no rapid or blitz, have done no puzzles, no lessons, or anything else,  I guess that bullet played without thinking would be all you would know about.  Therefore we will allow you to declare chess.com the winner based on the one category you are allowed to vote in.

Seriously,  I have never understood why lichess supporters feel compelled to come here and try to make us feel badly for playing here.  If it is really so great, why aren't you there?  Go.  Nobody is stopping you.

/ It is also important that chess.com has been able to support competitive chess during the pandemic, with all the live tournaments for grandmasters and titled players that it has sponsored.    Free may be attractive in many ways but it doesn't fund prizes.

1131.
1131 games and not a single one of them not bullet

Don't be fooled by stats on just one account. They are legion. They are many. And they're not even hiding it. Please keep up.

I apologize. That was not my intent in making this post. I merely thought that I would compare the two, and explain why I thought one was better.

Also, in regards to the issue of ads:
It’s not so much that I can’t sit through an ad, it’s the ads themselves. A lot of the ads I encounter are obscene, advertising sites I won’t mention and wouldn’t go on. I have more than a problem with these.
