Northern Ireland is still part of the UK because a majority of the population wish it. This has been the cause of a great deal of trouble and violence over the course of the twentieth century. For many years the UK had its own terrorists, the IRA. This situation is a good example of how history (in this case 17th century history) is bound up with modern politics and therefore makes the discussion of history here difficult.

Northern Ireland was partitioned in 1920 yes, however after the war (1918) Ireland was just a colony if you will of Britain. And that's when Britain decided they should give up control (treaty of 1921), some at first then total control eventually(1937). Northern Ireland is weird because of past plantations of Protestants from Scotland and England into Ulster, of course they had their own interests and feared a United Ireland because they felt their way of life would be under threat. Hence all the trouble over the past 40 or so years, I'm from Northern Ireland and I'm glad it's peaceful now. People are just sick of all the fighting frankly.

are you in northern ireland right now? if so, then your flag should be the british flag

Mine also should be the Union Flag. I choose to count myself as English rather than British. If it's good enough for the Scots, Welsh and Irish it's good enough for me!

how come there are flags for UK territorrie(if that's what they're called) but not flags for american states and canadian provinces/territorries?

England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are all called countries. Yes, I know, they are part of another country (UK) but that is how it is. The situation with some other bits of Britain (not UK) is even stranger. For instance, the Isle of man is ruled by the Queen but has its own parliament and completely separate legal and tax systems.

I haven't a clue why there are no flags for US states and Canadian provinces.

Due to the political situation here, people born in Northern Ireland can claim Irish or British nationality. I'm consider myself Irish, therefore I am Irish.

I think he may have been asking why there are flags for England, Scotland etc on chess.com but not flags for US states and Canadian provinces. Quebec certainly has a flag!

Although he disputes it, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are actual countries whereas individual states of America and Canada are not.

you're right, but england, scotland, wales, and northern ireland are part of the nation of UK, like the 50 states are part of the USA.

Calvin - You really cannot compare England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to the US state. It is not an apples to apples comparison.

The large difference being that the residents of those respective regions all owe different allegiances, have different faiths, and have histories marred by conflict with the other regions now within the framework of the UK. They are only now united, while the counterpart to your analogy cast off their nations and allegiances (only to become something much, much worse - benign, I'll say no more.)

fine, but still, i don't see why people in the UK can choose between Union Jack and their reigonal flag, while people in america and canada have only 1 choice

That was a bit cras Calvin.  The truth is that the countries that make up the UK, as was said earlier have been fighting each other for centuries only now we fight each other on the playing fields and thats why you have such things as rugby, football, cricket etc. etc. which all the world play and is the  reason why in many sports each of the home nations field their own teams in world competitions .

Itis simply because that is how those who run this site have set things up. You could try suggesting to Erik that states and provinces of other nations are allowed their own flags on chess.com.
