Bad language on Tactics Trainer

Hi, do staff prefer to be informed about bad language left in Tactics Trainer comments via the "Report Problem" icon in TT, or do they prefer the "Report Abuse" email?

Kupov

Oh come on.

Loomis

"Report Problem" is just for reporting something wrong with the tactics problem. For problems with user content use "Report Abuse".

Kupov, remember that this site is used by children as well as adults. Foul or abusive language really shouldn't be used.

huh?  this site is getting a bit outrageous with this language business.  kids might be here but not to the detriment of normal free speech.  I used the word "succubus" in a post yesterday and it was deleted and I got a slap on the wrist from Staff.  Wtf?  lol.

Knightsight

Much appreciated Loomis, thanks.

Shame on you Kupov Laughing lol

Kupov

Children know what swear words are before they are ten years old. I think they can handle it.

Loomis

What makes you think you have the right to free speech on this website?

Kupov, it doesn't matter if kids know what swear words are or not. On a purely practical level, the site (its owners and users) should be encouraging as many people to participate as possible. Parents are less likely to allow their kids to use a site where foul language is common. So if we're interested in having the best site we can, we should make it a friendly environment for all the users.

On a less practical, more philosophical note, I'm not worried that kids can't "handle it". But I do want to be part of a culture that promotes mature interaction. Young people are still forming in terms of treating people with respect. Why provide them with poor role models?

There is free speech but you have to realize that this is a site thats trying to promote chess to younger kids as well. That means the adults should be watching their language. Free speach yes, but also realize this site was created by people who have laid down the guidelines (no abusive language, religious, racial etc.) That is their rules.

This is like any club you join. There are guidlines set by the founders of the club & you have to abide by them. If you don't like it, you're free to leave the club. I think what they are trying to achieve here is a family friendy atmosphere for playing chess. If you want to play chess and be allowed to curse, swear, of even verbally attack other players, there are plenty of other sites on the net. Let's keep this site purely for chess, the learnng of chess, and the encouragement of younger players to get involved in the game.

ilikeflags, perhaps if you have already been 'busted' for saying something, it would be unwise to repeat that same thing again on the forums? Now, this is just me talking of course, but that seems a little... idiotic.

If someone is posting abusive messages on TT, then yes, please let us know and we'll remove the posts.

To elaborate on this point, free speech means that you are protected against government censorship (and even this has its limits, inciting riots, hate speech, etc.). Free speech does not protect your right to act like a jerk on a website.

The founders of the US understood what it meant to live under a repressive government and knew that keeping the right to free speech for the people was important to maintaining a balance of power with the government. People can freely convene and discuss their disagreements with government, the Press can freely publish without fear of government sanctions. These are imporant rights and to confuse them with the right to cuss on an internet forum is moronic.
