National masters and above get a free diamond membership.

Even CMs and FMs do - see http://www.chess.com/members/view/Kacparov and http://www.chess.com/members/view/FM_Eric_Schiller.

Both of those are higher than NM.

I wonder what's lower than NM (I'm inept at the rankings besides GM, IM, WGM, WIM)

I believe WFM and WCM, for 2100 and 2000 FIDE ratings respectively, are not recognised by chess.com.

I am not sure now. on this page this box is shown:

Titles GM
WGM
IM
WIM
FM
NM
CM   - Grandmaster
  - Womans Grandmaster
  - International Master
  - Woman Intl. Master
  - FIDE Master
  - National Master
  - Candidate Master

which implies that WCM and WFM are not recognised by chess.com. However, look at this member's profile. so perhaps chess.com used to recognise WCM and WFM, but then stopped? i am not sure

Thats not correct . The title CM and NM are roughly equivalent. I am NM ( in two countries ) and also qualify for the CM title but dont want to pay the fee connected to it so havent been awarded the title.  CM is 2200-2299 FIDE where NM ( USCF ) is 2200-2399  USCF.  Portugal also awards the NM title to players of 2200-2299 FIDE.

Alright, just I thought that Fide ratings were deflated compared to USCF.

Someone today floated a rumor about a free membership for National Masters, or maybe a free month of membership for someone who earns the title.

Is there any substance to this or any related variations on the idea?

Hi everyone

I found out that as an FM Im entitled to a free membership, so Ive filled out the "form" and submitted a scan of my passport to prove my identity. I did all of this nearly a week ago but my FM title still isnt being displayed next to my name. Does anyone know how long this will normally take? Do I need to submit anything else? Would a scan of my title certificate make the process speed up?

Cheers, FM Grant Szuveges

you should probably start a new forum in the help section. It will be notice much quicker than a comment on the second page of a year old thread.
Good luck.
