1. Teach how the pieces move and castling.
2. Teach captures and pawn promotion
3. Teach the value of pieces. For example, rook is five points, while bishop is 3 points. So given a chance, he should capture a rook instead of bishop.
4. Teach how the game is won(mate). Teach him how two mate with two rooks against a lone king. Show him simple one move or two move mate position. Ask him to solve easy one or two move mate problems.
5. Told him that he should castle to make the king safe and he can bring out the rooks.
6. Tell him to open with 1.e4 or 1.d4 as it open diagonals for the bishop.
7. Show him simple tactics like pin and fork. Then ask him to solve easy pin fork problems. Show him what is a material advantage.
8. If he is already familiar with the above, play some games. After the game show the mistake.
Repeat this process until fully grasp the concepts above. But they should at least solve 2 tactics problems per day.
