Minimum Age for chess.com

LOL!
I registered for my son who is 6. I do close the chat box and for the most part stay in the room while he plays. He's been enjoying the site thus far.
It would be nice to have a thread for parents of kids who play to try and connect so that kids could play other kids once in awhile.
Samuel2002's mom

I recently played a game against a member whose stated age was 12.She played fairly well and from the comments she made, enjoyed the game very much.I suggested that she CORRECT the MISTAKE she made on her birth year,in order to avoid conflict

dudes and dudettes, hi:
!@#%$&
i'm 12, for god's sake, and i feel it's perfectly alright for kids to sign up, so long as both their parents completely agree and know what their child is doing
Couldn't agree more (except I'm 11)

I guess there are mixed opinions in administration as well. I had one assitant principal feel this was a brilliant idea and to let parents decide if their child participates and then the other assistant principal argue that I'm opening a "can of worms" and may want to avoid the issue all together. Ultimately I would like to improve the play of the club ... we have looked at hiring an instructor but that was pricey ($150/hr!) so we are back to "square one" (or square A1) so to speak.
150$/hr!!
I'd work for less than that.
Actually I'm looking forward to donating time to a local high school.

I love the idea of being able to close the chat room. I believe this will be the year where I add a presence on Chess.com for my students and suggest to parents that they may want to close the chat piece OR monitor closely. I think more chatting goes on in live chess anyway.
Thanks for the input!

There is no reason why a child could not safely play here. Perhaps there should be an option for the parents to disable the child's chat and forum capabilites though.

I don't think the forum contains anything that a child shouldn't see. Especially getting that propaganda about Bobby Fischer out of their skulls.

The game of chess should be played by all ages. young and old and if something is said that it not good for a child than in my opinion it should not be said.
Agreed. My son plays chess here. He's just eleven. Foul language would probably keep him away from any site. But, so far, so good. He's having a ball playing chess even when he loses, which is most of the time.
but kids like my age should be alright!
