A. Soltis 's book "Pawn Structure Chess " discusses more than 14 major formations in his book. There are others that have written books about the subject. But there more formations that might not have been discussed for variety of reasons. One is that they present similar challenges to White and Black. Or they simply transform into the major formations that might have been studied.
