There are many resources for teachers online, many of which are free.
For lesson plans, try www.chesskidsacademy.com
or go to Kasparov Chess Foundation. There will be a link for a chess curriculum which includes a teacher's manual, a workbook, and an activities book. There is a section of the downloadable order form where a school can submit a letter on the school letterhead along w/ the form and receive the 3 book set free IF the $10.00 shipping fee is paid.
If you need a rubric for assessing student progress in chess lessons or activities, go to www.rubistar.org and type "chess" in the search box. There are hundreds to choose from; many are duplicates, but it's worth searching.
This site; chess.com is by far the best I"ve found for playing chess online. I'm telling all my chess buddies about it. Due to security policies in our schools, this site may not be used at school.
The key to teaching this game to students is to make the game, strategies, well thought out moves, relate to their present day obligation to make the best decisions possible. I would recommend teaching a mini lesson first on a topic...this is especially helpful in character building with students....such as setting goals and working through and reaching those goals.
