"Abandoned game" is triggered too soon!

This is so frustrating.

Sometimes, when I'm relying on public wifi like libraries or coffee shops, the internet connection temporarily disappears. Of course, if I'm offline for like 30+ seconds then the site decides I've abandoned the game. AND THAT'S OK.

But sometimes the connection comes back after 5-10 seconds, and already chess.com has decided I've abandoned the game. Seriously? Just 5-10 seconds and you kick me off my game?

That's WAY TOO SOON. Come on tech team, surely you can make that reasonable time.

Abandonment time is based on the time control and how early in the game it is.

Look at this recent game: https://www.chess.com/game/live/123482108802?move=62

I was already on move 32, and it was deemed abandoned after 12 seconds. But I only briefly lost internet after a few seconds, so it was 5-10 seconds of 'missing' before I was kicked out the game. How is that deemed NOT too soon?

And by the way, thanks for the link, that's useful.

But even at the extreme of 15 seconds of disconnect in a "completely lost position", as you can see from my own timer, chess.com did NOT follow its own rules. It definitely threw me out before that sad.png

On lichess the system disqulifies you after about 35 without connection, but the opponent can after 5 to 10 seconds. Maybe it is similar here (I don´t play much live chess here).

If this happens to often to you may consider switching (fully) to correspondence chess for a while.

Thanks. Yes most games are 3 day games already, and I don't get wifi interruption, but when I do it is annoying to get kicked out after 5-10 seconds.

You got disconnected on your opponent's turn, for 30 seconds, so the site considered the game abandoned. Though, based on the rules it looks like it happened too quickly. 🤔

My understanding is the site will be changing that at some point so the abandonment/disconnect timer doesn't start if it's not your turn but currently that's the way it works.

You can tell this from the game stats? I can't see it - would appreciate your guidance.

My move31 took me 18s, then black took 7s. Then my move32 took 12s, which chess.com accepted. That's when wifi got lost, and not longer after, when I reconnected, the game had booted me. Where do you see that it took "30 seconds" you mentioned? Or are you just quoting the rules rather than my game's stats?

Appreciate your help

Look at your opponent's clock. Before your move they were at 5:09 and after the game didn't end until they had 4:42.

OKKKKKKKKK. Got it -- I was just looking at the times down the side of the moves table and ignoring the clock. Thanks! And it seems Black didn't even make a move in those 30 second, which means it wasn't even my turn again, and yet it disconnected.

I suppose that is consistent with their rule of counting even when it's not my turn. I certainly hope they change that rule - it's not smart.

thanks for helping explain

So, there's one additional thing that mentioned as a note on that article and that can impact why the game was considered abandoned sooner than expected:

  • If a player disconnects in a completely lost position (say. -5 or worse), the game will be considered abandoned after just 15 seconds, regardless of the time control.

Suggestion Just play chess ONLY at home
