I say delete the ones closed for fair play and abuse. No reason to keep them.

We have begun deleting spammy, counting, and otherwise empty "friends" accounts.
Good luck in the future with more substantial "friend" choices.

The subject almost sounds like a threat. As in tell your friends to behave or else.
Why would you need to make a program to do that? If I don't want a closed account on my friends list, I can just use the "Remove Friend" option, right?
There are 25 million chess.com members, and there could be another 25 million closed accounts in the dark side.
Please do not wake up the Dead.
Rmove their names from the friendlist, search, forum posts and everything.

1 year ago I would have said that same thing. But we have too many settings, it makes the site more and more and more complicated. We need to find the right way to simply and make it good for everyone.

Yes!!
It is easy to remove your friends whether dead or alive. Some of us are very attached to members which account were closed or who closed it themselves.
