There was a new feature implemented yesterday for puzzle Difficulty. You can change the setting on the website (should be available on the apps in the near future) to make them harder; Hard and Extra Hard

so apparently the "standard" mode does not scale with your rating, i mean 1k difference is very high, i would consider these puzzles easy given the rating i have

I am finding the same as others in this thread, but I only noticed the difference in the last two days. Prior to that, I was offered puzzles based on my own rating, at around +/- 500 rating points (with the occasional outlier of extremely easy or extremely difficult, just to keep me on my toes). Now, even setting difficulty to "extra hard", I am still only getting puzzles below my current rating (c.3000). This is frustrating, and much less useful as a training tool -- I shall stop doing puzzles each day if it doesn't go back to something like the old system.

What was the rationale in changing it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

They do scale, just at a different level.

Extra Hard should be very similar to the original algorithm.

I'm experiencing the same thing. Constantly being shown puzzles 1000+ points below your current rating and getting +5 rating for it regardless is inflating ratings by a lot. And if those inflated ratings are then being fed back into the system then doesn't that throw everything out of whack? Mathematically this doesn't seem sound.

If I get shown a puzzle that's 1500 below my rating, I can't imagine receiving anything higher than +1 making sense. Plus if this is going to happen, this should be a very rare occurrence in the first place. Not 5-10 times in a row like I'm seeing now.

For example, certainly it wouldn't make sense if a GM beating an incredibly low rated opponent gives them a minimum of +5 no matter what. That would break the rating system. So why allow a similar thing with puzzles? It doesn't matter if you can change the difficulty from "Standard" to "Extra Hard". "Standard" needs to be a reasonable +/- range as well, otherwise the ratings can't be made to reflect reality. It would just be a meaningless (not to mention exploitable) number.

If someone wants to practice 0-1000 rated puzzles even though they're like 2500 or whatever, they could always do it with unrated "Custom Puzzles", right? I'm not understanding the logic of the current rated system. It feels broken to me.

I am around 2850 puzzles, but consistently get puzzles below 2000. I calculated the average rating of the last 25 puzzles I got, and it was around 2050.

I also calculated the average puzzle ratings for some friends, and some were much higher despite being lower rated in puzzles than me.

Is this a bug? Does anyone else have this problem? It has been going on for a couple months now and it is really hurting my puzzles experience.

There have been changes to the puzzle ratings on the back end but the UI still shows the old puzzle ratings, so you can't rely on what the puzzle shows currently.

There's are also some other changes in the puzzle selection algorithm some members have.

The UI should be updated to the correct ratings in the near future and a single selection algorithm chosen as well .

Wait you mean reaching 3,721 in puzzles doesn't mean I am 3,721 elo?

My soul is crushed

My puzzle rating is 2100. Today I got the following five puzzles in terms of rating:

-686

-616

-1330

-100(!)

-603

This doesn't make any sense. Yesterday I also had 3/5 puzzles below 1000, with one of them being 477.

As previously mentioned, ‘if it isn’t broken don’t fix it’

I use chess.com to track my progress over time, and if the ratings keep being adjusted etc then it’s meaningless.

the last days all I seem to get is puzzles bellow 1000, 1500 at the highest all for +5.
I don't mind the rating thing I am trying to learn. Just wonder why all of a sudden this changed. Don't judge me I can't even get the low rated puzzles right surprise or fast enough.
edit: oh sorry, I missed there was a 2nd page to this thread.

Change your Difficulty setting to Hard or Extra Hard

I mean a lot of the puzzles are definitely the rating that shows (mate in 1, free piece), and I only get +5 and -20

FR! I was 3100 but then I dropped a lot (most puzzles were 2300 and less) so idk it's kinda annoying.

Thank you!

I had no idea one could do this.

There's no current way to do this on the mobile client, by the way, folks. As of now, one needs to use the desktop site on a browser.

What else is missing from the mobile client? I almost never use a browser to play, you see?

The setting is new and was just released a couple of days ago. The setting should be coming to the apps in future updates.

There are quite a few differences between the site and apps

Why cant the puzzle difficulty just adjust the higher or lower you get like before? Seems a pointless change. Anyway what’s done is done, maybe someone has to justify their salary 😂

It still does. The higher your puzzle rating the higher the top of the puzzle selection rating band will be. All difficulty settings basically have different bands but they're still based on your current rating.

When I did a batch of puzzles, after the change, Hard gave me a very similar feel on the puzzle as they were before the change. Or maybe slightly more on the lower end of the rating range.

I always get +5 0r -20 too.

I can share some statistics on that from today. For a rating of 2.6k-2.7k, standard gave me puzzles with an average of 1759, hard 1875 and extra hard 2121 (all averaged over 25 puzzles).

What still seems very odd to me is, for example, standard and hard gave me many puzzles arround 1.8k. And the puzzles on hard were indeed much more difficult. While thats what one would expect, why do the puzzles have the same rating then?
