these are the scenarios where a game can end in a draw. Stalemate - when player doesn't have legal move to play in his/her turn, and the king is not in check. Threefold repetition - when the same position occurs 3 times (you might also hear about "perpetual check" which usually leads to threefold repetition by forcing the king to keep repeating moves.) Insufficient material - when both player doesn't have enough material to deliver a checkmate (example: king vs king /king vs king + a bishop / king vs king + a knight) and no pawns left that can be promoted.. Insufficient material vs time - when a player runs out of time but their opponent doesn't have enough material to deliver a checkmate then its a draw... example: you have a king and your opponent has king and a rook, if your opponent runs out of time then its a draw! because you don't have sufficient material to checkmate him. draw by agreement - by offering or by accepting a draw offer..
Forced draw too early or for no reason

go back to your last game. its a draw because you trapped your opponent's king and has no legal move to play.
The recent game I had - 2 queens, a couple of pawns and a bishop... I was about to checkmate with the 2 queens before being stopped by an automatic draw, I understand that's the intent of the auto draw system but that's twice it hasn't worked with that intention.

It's a stalemate, a draw because your opponent has no legal moves but is not in check - something you have to learn to avoid when you are 'about to checkmate'.

The game was a stalemate.
Learning the most basic rules of the game is essential, you can't really play chess without that. It's not too late, just google "stalemate".

Hello just wanted to post that I've just had my 2nd or 3rd game where I was going to get a guaranteed checkmate on my opponent online and the site declared a draw. My guess is that it was from repeated similar moves from the opponent king on both games (they were retreating in both cases) but I was literally 1 move off from a checkmate and had to settle for an undeserved draw?? Can this please be tuned or adjusted so these occurrences don't occur going forward.
