I still don't understand why that would lead me to finishing 15 seconds behind my opponent when I've been moving instantaneously throughout the game.

That's a pretty extreme example alright.  Have you read the articles?  Help>ask a question>Lag.  There must be 3 or 4 of them.  Almost sounds like you had a temporary disconnect that delayed receipt of a move.

Thanks.... But i thought a time lag only delayed the appearance of a move on the clock rather than actually losing me that time

And that's why I thought you might have had a temporary disconnect...the move has been made, the clock at the server is ticking, but you haven't gotten it yet.  That second link I gave you mentioned some typical ways that can happen.  Maybe someone who actually understands all this can weigh in; I've got an analog mind in a digital world...sigh.

Only up to a point. If your connection is really bad, then it will supersede the lag compensation and you will start to lose time even if playing instantly.

No it's not the result that mainly matters if my opponent is effectively getting extra time over me.
