If there's a good chance the opponent will be moving that piece than premoving onto it isn't a good idea. Note it is still safe to do this with pawns.

Yeah, it's like this today.
I think a good solution would be to add a option for premoving like: "If piece is on square" "Capture on square".
If you premove your piece onto your opponent piece, and they move their piece, then your piece will still move to that square.
This means you can blunder your piece if you aren't aware of this interaction.
I think if you premove onto a piece, then the move should be cancelled if the capture isn't still on after your opponents turn.
