Puzzle ratings don't matter
Revert Puzzle Difficulty Setting
The rating aspect is just one fraction of what's criticized. I for one liked the old system, where each puzzle was my rating on average and actually challenging. So, I would pass and fail half of the puzzles and roughly stay at my rating, but would continuously get challenging puzzles. This is not the case anymore.
Nowadays the puzzles are significantly below my rating and mostly very eazy, regardless the selected difficulty. As a side effect, the ratio for staying at a rating level is not even close to 50:50 anymore. And solving those trivial puzzles to get a challenging one now and then, just makes me feel like wasting my time as you are not learning anything by that.
And with the current system, puzzle rating is indeed rather useless, as it's just a measure of how much time one put into solving puzzles.
Very strongly agree. I don't want to do the 'solve puzzle's anymore, nor do I want a fake high rating on my profile. I guess puzzle rush survival is the best option remaining, but it's not as much fun.
If you're seeing badly rated puzzles and you're part of the Beta try switching it off -- Martin Stahl's suggestion here: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/more-puzzles/is-it-just-me-or-are-puzzles-are-significantly-easier-today?page=3#comment-117132784
This worked for me. Immediately after leaving the Beta I have sensibly rated puzzles again.
I have always preferred Chess.com to Lichess, but I strongly dislike the route Chess.com has taken with adding a difficulty slider to puzzles. It makes rating completely meaningless and I can no longer compare my puzzle rating to others to get a gauge on how good I am compared to them at spotting tactics.
I understand the need to innovate. It's chess after all, it's been the same for a thousand years, but I don't think this is the route to go.
In my opinion, the only thing that should impact how difficult the puzzles you get are is your rating. If you're 2,000 rating, you should be hunting for tactics that are from real games between 2,000 rated players and lower, with a healthy mix between the type of puzzle and complexity level.
Rating was really my only way to gauge my progress and now it's meaningless. I had been hard stuck and thought I was improving, only to find out you have changed the entire system.
Please at least give us the ability to disable the new system and revert back to what it was.
I have always thought this way as well - the chess.com puzzles are more realistic, probably because they are from real games or studies. But lichess has recently improved, and their puzzles are less computer like.
Yes please put puzzles back to how it was. If you want a new version where someone can set the range.... say custom puzzles, then do that. You've ruined one of the features I really liked about this site. Even on extra hard, at my 2600 rating, it gave me 1X 2500 puzzle, then 4 in a row at 1800... it's not fun anymore
I have a puzzle rating of 2500+, and i keep getting puzzles with 1500 difficulty, it's very annoying
The current puzzles settings are Standard, Hard, and Extra Hard. One solution that seems like it would be easy to implement is to add another option, Adaptive, that randomly gives you puzzles within some range from your current rating (e.g. +/- 200 points). Or, alternatively, whatever the old algorithm was.

Just revert back to how it was all togheter! For everyone so we can compare again! This is too noob friendly! I've treid the "extra hard" setting and its giving me easier puzzles then before. By alot too.
Get rid of the "puzzle objective" option too.
Why being able to choose your difficulity of puzzles makes people mad about it? It's a great addition.
Maybe not for some people but you can't be mad about it.
ofc we can be mad about it. It sucks. Everyones rating means nothing anymore. And also I cant get the old difficulty back. Even on "extra hard" its way easier than before.

This worked for me. Immediately after leaving the Beta I have sensibly rated puzzles again.
Unfortunately this worked for only about 3 puzzles and went back to very low rated for me. At 2900 I'm occasionally getting puzzles around 2600 but almost all are 1900-2100.
This new system is absolutely horrendous. In the previous system I would hover between 3200-3400, and would do a few/dozen puzzles a day with a 50%ish pass rate. These puzzles would be challenging and require significant calculation. Often they are too difficult for my skill level and I can spend several minutes working to no avail, and get to see the analysis to try to learn. I enjoy this.
Since the change I've had as many as 20 puzzles in a row around 2300. I see Martin has claimed that the value shown isn't indicative of the actual puzzle rating, which I would have no problem with. The problem that can't be ignored however is that all of my puzzles are now well below my skill level. If I try to do them too quickly I can miss, but if I take the time to pay attention they are easily cleared. Like others have found, I'm at a 30 puzzle streak and no longer get challenged.
When I want to blitz some easy puzzles for speed I can (and do) go to Puzzle Rush for that. If "Very Hard" puzzles aren't going to challenge me then someone has messed up royal.

Custom Puzzles allow you to set your difficulty. But that doesn’t belong in Rated Puzzles.
I think that the feature would be more justified if the Standard Mode was the old algorithm, and the Hard/Extra Hard modes gave you significantly harder puzzles than we normally would get, just in case people really want to challenge themselves.
But as of right now, the difficulties are essentially Very Easy, Easy, and Normal. The point of the rating was to make it so that you get puzzles that are at your level, but people being able to choose their difficulty and do a bunch of easy puzzles to improve their rating completely invalidates others’ high scores.
Imagine Chess.com dropping an update that made it so that all beginners could easily reach a Chess rating of 1600. Actual 1600s who went through the pain and tears to get there would be absolutely furious, and the whole thing would be unfair. I feel like it’s the same with this.
