One of, if not the best part of chess.com is the convenience. Being able to play anywhere from across the table to across the globe, on the couch or on the toilet, anywhere, anytime is what makes it so useful. But this convenience is only fully given by the app. So why do so many features not get put on it? Where’s variants? Where’s posting games and puzzles in forums? Where’s all of the other features not in the app, even though it would be something that many people would be overjoyed to see?

The app development teams are smaller, compared to the main site and the apps rely on the main site to hook into. The site has to prioritize all work based on where it's going to have the most impact and maintain site operations.
