Maybe I wrote all this to get the achievement for submitting a new thread. But just maybe.
Chess.com gems
You have totally centered the target; chess.com is becoming Candy Crush.
V3 is slow on my PC...but i chose to remain, but the Achievements is pulling me away from here....
I just received a Fanatic achievement award for logging in 30 days in a row.
This would make a normal person reevaluate his life choices.
Do not be mislead by the title, this is not a compilation of the most stupid comments I have read in the site. Sorry to disappoint you...but if you are looking for a thread like that, "The Secret of Chess" will suffice.
Now to the topic...
Recently a new "feature" was added to the site: achievements. As I have achieved all the goals I have set myself effortlessly during my life (in case you are curious, I am talking about beating Computer-Easy and eating dark chocolate), I consider myself the personification of success. Therefore, I was not impressed by the new addition to the site, as the importance of e.g. playing 10 live games pales in comparison with what I have managed to do in the real world.
Despite my lack of interest in them, the sudden appearance of "achievements" made me think. I came to the conclusion that my nightmares about chess.com becoming a mobile game were coming true. "Learn chess by playing Candy Crush" was just a matter of time.
However, then I realized that there was still something really important missing: a coin for the game. Every sensible developer adds one and then tells us that we can use them to cheat by getting ridiculously big advantages or to buy completely useless outfits. Chess.com cannot be the black sheep in the app store, and I am going to suggest how this could be implemented.
First of all, I know chess.com already has a freemium model that offers different memberships with their distinctive prices, features and whatever. I am not suggesting to remove this, we can have both suscriptions and a chess.com coin.
The chess.com coin should not have a name that alludes to money , to avoid confusing users with cryptocurrencies. Rival games have used the term gems successfully, it sounds valuable without being money, and I suggest that we should take that course of action. Gems could be used to get a piece for free, take back a move, move twice or other unfair advantages. As for aesthetical useless changes, a certain amount of gems could get you the possibility of having two profile pictures, one for the stalkers and another for the rest of people. The concept still needs development but I believe this is a good start.
