The draw button does gain a highlight.
Highlight "draw" button when a draw can be claimed

I have a similar suggestion but perhaps an audible cue would work ok. Actually, I think chess.com added a 10sec audible sound or something like that not too long ago, but I am not sure what happened to that. I didn't care for it much, but if I could control when it rang I think it would be more useful. Maybe just a programable interface with check boxes, sound for draw, sound for 1 min or 30 seconds, etc.

I did notice the button light up when opponent requested a draw, but it did NOT change when a draw was forcible.
In turn-based chess, when you log in, if you can claim a draw the button will change from "Draw" to "Claim Draw". Simply applying this same change to Live would do wonders.

Highlighting the draw button in the latter two cases would be outside intervention in the natural course of the game. It is up to the player to recognize that the conditions for a draw claim have been met. An extreme example to make the point: I would like flashing lights to go off when I have a forced mate in two moves.

It shouldn't be brought to the players attention, because this would effectively be outside assistance. It's up to the players to recognize that a draw can be claimed.

I guess I think of it as a UI change to help new players on chess.com: the player may well know that it's possible to claim a draw, and in OTB play they'd announce it, but they just don't know that the Draw button serves dual purpose on this site (request if possible, or force if claimable)

Well, in that case I'd say the best thing to do would be to rename it "Request/Claim Draw" or something similarly clear.

That is a good point!
There should be no sign on any button when you can claim a draw. that is plain cheating.
gregpkennedy said (in post number 4) In turn-based chess, when you log in, if you can claim a draw the button will change from "Draw" to "Claim Draw". I didn't know that since I haven't run into the situation. My suggestion to the staff is to remove that and instead do one of these:
Either there should be a separate "Claim Draw" button visible right from the beginning, but it will only work whenever a draw can be claimed according to the rules, or there should just be the "Draw" button, which would work as a claim draw button whenever a draw can be claimed. There should be no change whenever a draw can be claimed. It is, as I said above, plain cheating to give the player any hints in the form of a button suddenly appearing or suddenly highlighted.

I don't mean to suggest highlighting it, I mean to permanently change it so that it's clear that it serves both purposes. It would say "Request/Claim Draw" even on the first move of the game and would never change.
Yeah TheGrobe, that is a good idea.

It's interesting to note that on the analysis board in turn-based (and I believe also conditional moves interface) the + and # symbols are shown on the hypothetical lines you play out. Arguably, this is also "assistance".
The other idea posted in this topic was that it should be clearly shown to you when your opponent offers a draw. Here it makes sense to have a notification as opposed to the possibility of claiming a draw where no notification should happen.

Perfect solution, would work great for me. I like the single button more than having two buttons: because then players might be inclined to attempt clicking Claim Draw every turn if there was a separate button.

LIVE CHESS: The "draw" button should gain an outline or highlight when a draw can be forced / claimed without the opponent needing to accept. In other words, light up the button when one of these conditions is met:
* The opponent has requested a draw
* A position has been repeated three times
* 50-move rule is reached
I've beaten players who didn't know how to claim a draw, so they repeat moves until they lose on time. I've also missed draw opportunities when the opponent requested while ahead, and I missed it in the chat.
