Can players join a daily tournament after the start date?

Curious as I created a tournament back in November to start Jan 1st, 2020, but I've only got 6 people signed up.  I thought it was gonna fill faster.  Curious if the web site allows late registration, or is it cut off when the first matches start? My groups are groups of 10, so I don't even have a full group yet.

Once it starts no new players can be added.

I created a tournament for today. Dec, 11 (Since it is Anand's birthday). I had kept the maximum entries at 36. 35 had registered. Today many of them tried to register but it failed.
