First Tournament rules cl;arification and advice.has opened with C4

Hi, I need some advice.

I have entered my first tournament, It is named as a Sicilian tournament. One of my opponents has opened 1 C4 (the English opening) Now I am in a quandary...

I'm an easy going sort and I would prefer to avoid confrontation but this is a tournament so it could be serious, what if I lose this game and I miss the cut because of it or something?

What would you more experienced guys do in this situation?

Well, you're not allowed to ask for advice on what to play in an ongoing game. So I assume you're question is whether or not every game in the tournament is supposed to be the Sicilian Defense. The short answer is no, the games don't have to be the Sicilian Defense.

You can look around at the other games in the tournament, many of them are not Sicilian.

If the tournament director wanted to make a theme tournament starting with the Sicilian, the position would have started with 1. e4 c5 already played.

The tournament is Sicilian in name only as the tournament director did not set the starting position.

In my opinion you can play as you like. There is no takeback so there should be no repercussions.

You could try contacting your opponent and arranging a transposition but it appears his other opponents are just playing on. See the games where he was white.

I see, thanks that is what I was asking.

I assumed that from the name of the tournament we would all play E4 C5 and take it from there.

Oh Well, looks like I messed up because thats what I've done in all my other games 1 e4 with the white and replied to 1 e4 with c5 in the others.

I will laugh about this one day I'm sure!
