Don't try to play fancy chess! Wink

Players in the lower rating brackets usually make enough mistakes in the middle game to get themselves in bad positions. Just playing solid moves should be the best way to go.

I wish somebody would have told me this before I attended my first tournament. I felt like a 14 year old Kasparov with all the people around me and I obviously completely failed! Tongue Out

I wish you the best of luck!

Bottle of water and snack for each match. Plan out your sleep and dining schedules for multiday tournaments. Don't forget to submit your score after each game, and check if your opponent is submitting the score. Don't let a loss get to you. Just play each game on its own and don't think about your current standing, whether you are winning or losing.

If I only have a month, I usually just buy a big box of Depends.

Oh yeah, always go to the bathroom before your match even if you don't feel you have to. Try to arrive early for your match each round so you don't feel rushed. Once i arrived a few minutes late and my opponent had startted my clock. Even though i still had plenty of time (only 3 minutes had elapsed), i felt completely flustered for the first 10 moves before i settled down ... And had a time advantage.
