My guess is that your friends are playing in an official chess.com tournament and also a premium-member led tourney, since that is possible.
Also, I presume that you are trying to join another premium-member led tourney, which isn't possible until you're finished with Round 1 in the tourney that you're in right now. You can, although, join the monthly chess.com tournament for your category here, and you don't have to wait for your ongoing tournament to finish: http://www.chess.com/tournament/13th-chesscom-thematic-tournament---ruy-lopez-schliemann-defense-1001-1200

Hello, I'm just participating in a tournament at the time, and I would go somewhere else, but when I try to join, a message appears saying I must be a Premium User to play in more than one tournament.
