Opponent waiting for timeout

Does it effect any results (or rankings) if my opponent times out? We're way past the 4 moves bit so that is fine, I'm essentially at the point where I need them to move (forced move to block check), then I take them for mate. I can see they have been logging on and playing but it's been 5 days now and they haven't played their move to let the game end.

It doesn't affect the rating points whichever way the game is won. You will get the same if your opponent loses by timeout as you would do if you had checkmated him brilliantly in 12 moves.

Cheers, I assume the ratings calculation is based on their end of game rating right? In which case the only downside is 5 days ago they were about 1010 and now they are 985, not that it really matters too much at this level, I just want to crack the 900 so I can set a new target of 1000 😀

Strangemover

Yeah that's right. 1010-985 should not affect the points you gain much, 1 point less at most. You can see what you will gain by clicking 'info' and 'rating adjustment' on the game page.

you can set conditional moves so that when your opponent does make his move, yours is made instantly. if you do have a forced mate, you can simply sit back and wait for the result to be confirmed

I've had opponents do that to me in the past, I'll have a look and figure it out, would be much simpler (and quicker) when you're in a forced endgame. Thanks for the tip.

I've had the same issue with 5min games. Several games aborted without a reply, or my opponent stops playing once they realise they really are going to loose. At about 1min 30 into a 5 min game that's a lot of time I could use doing something better than watch their clock run down!

I don't sign in to play much now, and my response to these ignorant time-wasters is to get on with something else for a couple of minutes, then go to a new game. I don't give them the satisfaction of claiming they 'only' lost on time.

If these players are signed in, their ID is known - could Chess.com suspend them for a period of time for repeat offences? One-offs could be for legitimate reasons, dropped connection, someone at the door etc but I really think something should be done.

And don't get me going on players not resigning ... play on if both of you are in time trouble, but with a minute or two to play out, give up!
