So what you are saing is that instead of being seduced by the online number, we should be seduced by the offline one?

Even OTB ratings can be misleading.

landwehr:

in your first post, you said that online ratings were below true rating, in second post you said that online rating was inflated by "helps available online."

so, do they cancel out and be accurate?!?

Why all this obsession on the world with money bills. It is only a piece of paper. If you think about it the number printed on them can be very misleading due to inflation etc. Many buy much less than they could afford, even after many price fluctuations. Your bank account is a false measure and the only real reflection of a persons richdom is all the cash hidden in his mattress.

Same thing, really. Your rating is as valuable as you make it.

great analogy!

money gets you a lot more than any rating number

In a way, isn't the sum of money I'm owning not the rating of my financial prosperity? Of course, my Chess rating is worthless in the real world, but I fight vigorously to defend and to raise it. And that effort of mine makes this number very precious to me.

Or would you randomly abandon games, because rating doesn't matter? No, everytime you play to win, as somebody does who is obsessed with his rating.

I went to the shop and bought groceries.

They only cost 150FIDE.

How the world should be.

Then we'd have threads like:

"which opening will earn me enough to feed my family"

Ratings correspond to how good of a person you are, your status in life and the number of ferrari's one has in one's garage.
