Tie break system

I was wondering what you guys think about this. I've just finished a tournament in 4th place. So very close to my first tournament medal. When I looked at the results I actually felt like I might have deserved 3rd place. Not really, because I know the rules don't work that way, but it got me wondering about those rules.

Here's the situation: it was a 30|0 Rapid Quad Swiss tournament. I've won 3 out of the 4 rounds, as did the guy in 3rd place. He got more tie break points, despite only playing 2 of the 4 games. How? He got a bye in the first round, then won twice, and then didn't play the last round. On one hand, you could say that he may have won that last game, so it's fair he ended above me. On the other hand, you could also say the opposite about his bye (he may have lost that game). I feel like this would cancel each other out. The tie break system kicks in, and as he's beaten players with more tournament points, he ends above me (again, those are the rules, so I accept the result).

However, I think it would be a good idea to reward people for actually playing. So that people are actually encouraged to finish the tournament instead of leaving. So if someone leaves the tournament early, he ends bottom of all the players with the same amount of wins. Now I know they're most likely not gonna change those rules, but I'm wondering what you guys think about this. Feel free to post your unfiltered thoughts; if you think this idea is just stupid I'd like to hear that as well.
