Quoting @Meadmaker:

A quad is a four player round robin.

If there are twelve people in a tournament, to play in a quad format, you take the 12 players, and put them in order of their ratings.  Then, the top 4 play a round robin against each other, the next four play a round robin against each other, and the four lowest play a round robin against each other.  Each round robin requires three rounds of play, for a total of six games.

The quad format does not produce an overall winner.  It only produces a winner within each quad.  It's a good format for a schedule with time available for only three rounds, and low prizes.  Every player gets to play three rounds of Chess against players that are roughly equal in rank, and usually has at least a passing shot at first place within his group.

The time limit for each game is shown in the tournament's title; for example, "30|0 Rapid Quad Swiss" is a tournament with 30 minutes and no increment for each player.

Do you have to play the game in 30 minutes or is the clock only ticking when you are logged in on chess.com?

You and your opponent both have 30 minutes on your clock, and your time decreases when it is your move, and does not change during your opponent's move.

Sorry, I have not been clear, I know the principles of the chess clock. What I meant is: is it possible to take a break from the game and continue later like you do with daily chess for instance.

I think a quad is just like a Swiss. It's just called quad.
