Can someone please explain the different kinds of tournaments and the corresponding rules. I tried one and the board wasn’t set up the standard way. I was so confused! Thanks! I’m new to this scene and would like to play real people.

Chess960 is a version of chess where the back rows are randomized according to very wide rules (bishops on different square colours and king between rooks) and is made force players to learn opening tactics rather than memorize a book of openings. If it wasn't chess960, it must Bea custom setup and don't play those, that isn't chess.

@radovan3001

Bea is my autocorrect's word for "be"

Custom setup is where the board has one standardized setup but it is decided by someone else, not the standard setup.

@mamakrissy was it 960 or custom setup? If on chess.com, probably one of the two.

I think that mamakrisy figured it out.

He played 3 chess960 games the day he posted.
