Why do some players register on tournaments and then don't play?

I've been repeatedly having opponents in daily tournaments who register and then don't play at all or simply resign after the first move. What's the point of this behaviour?

Even though they take only one click to join, many tournaments take weeks or months to fill.
In the meantime, some of the players have moved on to other things.
Well, when I register on a tournament, I either check first how filled up it already is, if I don't want to wait very long, or, if I pick a tournament still very empty, I accept that I'll have to wait a bit, so I check it from time to time.
