Long ago we missed the 60th birthday of Carol Vorderman, who has become a celebrity and prominent on British television, having made her name as the mathematician on Countdown 1982-2008 for 26 years but she has done much else amassing 205 screen credits as herself – she has hosted the Pride of Britain Awards on ITV since 1999 and has guested on and hosted many other shows such as This Morning, The One Show, GMTV, and was a temporary replacement for Lorraine Kelly on her show, Points of View and presented Loose Women 2011-13; has also been on Strictly Come Dancing in 2004 & I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2016. Born in Bedford, Beds, she grew up in her mother’s hometown of Prestatyn, Denbighshire, North Wales and went to primary school St Mary’s & Blessed Edward Jones Catholic High School in Rhyl, Wales, after which studied engineering at Cambridge University and graduated Sidney Sussex College 1981, with a subsequent Master’s Degree; now has Honorary Degrees from Bangor North Wales and Bath Universities. She is a member of MENSA with an IQ 154 and was awarded the MBE in 2000 for services to broadcasting. She was in 2004 runner-up to Nigella Lawson in a Radio Times survey as “thinking man’s crumpet” and won the Rear of the Year Award in 2011 and 2014. She started her working career as a junior civil engineer in Llanberis, then as a graduate management trainee in Leeds. Has been newspaper columnist for the Daily Telegraph & Daily Mirror, and written books on detox diets and educational books, and has also has produced many products related to Sudoku. Married twice with two children she has had homes in Glandore, West Cork, Ireland and Bristol and currently lives in central London. Has a longstanding interest in aviation, flying herself, and is a national ambassador for Air Cadets, and has been made an Honorary Group Captain in the Royal Air Force.
