The Solar Challenge

I realise this has nothing to do with chess, but we are living in South Africa, where this event takes place...

The SASOL Solar Challenge is a challenge for all solar cars. Teams from all over the world build solar cars and race against other teams. This is unlike a usual race. The winner is not the car who crosses the finish line first, but the one who rode the farthest. There are "loops" for the better cars to get more miles in one day.

The solar cars started in Pretoria on 27 September 2014 and they will end in Cape town on 4 October 2014. They will make stops in Pretoria, Sasolburg, Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Graaff-Reinet, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, Swellendam and Cape Town. They main route will span appoximately 2000 kilometres through the country.

You have to keep in mind that the solar cars need solar energy and stop next to the road to "charge". They start when the sun comes up and stop when the sun goes down.

There can only fit one person in a solar car and the rest of the team rides in a car in front or behind the solar car. There are 11 teams that are competing this year. They are: Anadolu Solar Team, DSJ Solar Car Team, Near East University, North-West University, NUON Solar Team, Solar Eagles, Tshwane University of Technology, Team UKZN, UCT SVG, WITS Solar Car Team and University of Johannesburg. Eight of these teams are from South Africa.

This event is held every 2 years in South Africa. It has 3 diffrent categories or classes. These three classes are: the Olympia Class(the Primary FIA Class), the Adventure Class and the Sustainability Fleet.

The Olympia Class is the main competitive class for solar-electric vehicles. The Adventure Class is reserved for any other solar-electric vehicles that have been allowed in any previous international Solar Challenges or other major events. The Sustainability Fleet is desighned to provide a forum to further demonstrate advanced technologies in personal transport applications.
