I played chess from about age 10, at school and college. The chess scene in West London in the late 60s was unwelcoming to newcomers, so I stopped for five years. When we moved to Cumbria in 1973, I played for club and county, until pressure of work and other outside activities caused me to stop again in about 1981. After I retired, I started playing again in 2011, for Hebden Bridge in the Calderdale League.
