Dmitry Jakovenko (pictured) defeated leader Laurent Fressinet in the last round of the 2012 European Individual Chess Championships to take the title and €14,000 with a score of 8½/11.

Despite his last round loss, Laurent Fressinet finished in second place on 8/11, with superior tie-breaks to a dozen other players on that score.

Top seed Fabiano Caruana lost his last round game to finish well back in 38th place on 7/11. Anish Giri was a further half point behind on 6½/11 in 91st place!
