Paragua rules 2009 Nueva Ecija National Open Chess Championship

The Nueva Ecija Natinal Open ,held in Palayan city ended in a two way tie for first.Both GM's Mark Paragua and Eugene Torre finished with six wins and three draws to bag the combined P 300,000.00 (Phil peso) in the nine round Swiss system tournament. Paragua ranked third in the tournament clinch the title by virtue of higher tie break points. Veteran GM Eugene Torre , a candidate for the World Championship in the 1980's defeated Rhobel Legaspi in the final round. GM John Paul Gomez finished in a tie with six others for third to 9 th places with seven points. Also with the same score were IM's Richard Bitoon, Barlo Nadera,gm Villamayor and NM Edgardo Garma. GM Darwin Laylo led a group of players with 6.5 points.
