Elista Grand PrixThe FIDE Grand Prix Series is not the most stable event in chess world, but it's a fact that the first few moves of the first round in Elista have been made; pairings include Radjabov-Cheparinov and Leko-Akopian.

The FIDE Grand Prix Series has suffered considerably recently; the third organising city Doha (Qatar) withdrew just a few weeks ago and so did Montreux (Switzerland), where the fourth event was to take place. On top of that FIDE decided on a Candidates Tournament and one way to describe the effect is that it just lowered the GP participants' chances to become world champion.

In a period when the future of the Grand Prix was very uncertain, both Magnus Carlsen and Michael Adams decided to withdraw. Because of Doha's and Montreux's cancellation, their nominated players Mohamad Al Modiahki (who played in Sochi) and Yannick Pelletier (who didn't play yet) also had to leave the series.

The four players have been subsituted by Vladimir Akopian, Evgeny Alekseev, Pavel Eljanov and ex-FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov. More about recent Grand Prix developments in this article; but we presume that you'd prefer to concentrate on the chess part from now on, and so do we.

First round pairings: Bacrot-Kasimdzhanov, Jakovenko-Wang Yue, Leko-Akopian, Inarkiev-Alekseev, Mamedyarov-Grischuk, Gashimov-Eljanov, Radjabov-Cheparinov.
