Chess.com Gets Surprise '6 Out Of 5 Stars' Tribute At Apple’s WWDC
In a moment few had expected, Chess.com earned an unforgettable shoutout on one of the world’s biggest tech stages, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
The WWDC is held annually to showcase new software and technology, and had millions tuning in on YouTube on Monday for the 90-minute event. While many were watching for potential groundbreaking news, it was the final musical surprise that stole the show.
As the event wrapped up, singer-songwriter Allen Stone took the stage to perform a comedic tribute to app developers. His song, titled "6 Out Of 5 Stars," had lyrics lifted entirely from actual App Store reviews.
Stone gave a musical nod to a handful of popular apps such as Duolingo, Flighty, Gentler Streak, Sleep Cycle... and yes, Chess.com. "So I’d give it 6 out of 5 staaaars..."
You can rewatch the entire performance below, with the part about Chess.com beginning at around 1:30):
The lyric was taken directly from a glowing 2020 review of Chess.com's iOS app, which praised some of the features: "I love being able to use all the different features of Chess.com... I would give this app 6 out of 5 stars if I could!"

That line made its way not only into the lyrics, but also onto millions of screens as the Chess.com logo appeared mid-performance. Stone even gave a second musical nod to the app later in the song.
One user on X/Twitter perfectly summed up the reactions, and it wasn't on our "bingo card" either!
Seeing at @chesscom review sang at WWDC “6 out of 5 stars” not on my bingo card. 🤣

The surprise spotlight didn’t just warm hearts, but it likely boosted downloads too. Chess.com’s iOS app, currently rated 4.8 out of 5 stars from nearly 600,000 users, climbed to number-seven in Strategy Games and top five in Board Games in Apple Store this week.
