Anand Beats Topalov In Nanjing
All three games were decisive in the third round of the Pearl Springs Masters in Nanjing.
The most eagerly awaited clash saw Topalov and Anand face-off over the board for the first time since Anand won their world championship match earlier this year to retain his crown.
Anand won the final game of that match using the Lasker Defence to the Queen's Gambit, and he played the same defence again today with the same result!
Elsewhere, Carlsen overcame Wang Yue's Petroff defence, and a mistake from Gashimov cost a pawn and eventually the game against Bacrot.
The standings after three rounds:
Carlsen, Magnus | 2826 | 2½ |
Anand, Viswanathan | 2800 | 2 |
Bacrot, Etienne | 2716 | 1½ |
Wang Yue | 2732 | 1 |
Topalov, Veselin | 2803 | 1 |
Gashimov, Vugar | 2719 | 1 |
The draw for round four is Topalov v Wang Yue, Gashimov v Carlsen, and Bacrot v Anand. Live coverage is available at the official website, and round-by-round updates will continue here at Chess.com!
