Bacrot Falters In Nanjing
Etienne Bacrot has been the revelation of the Nanjing Pearl Springs Masters so far, but his good run came to an end in round seven.
The Frenchman overplayed his hand against Topalov, missing a tactic and handing the Bulgarian his first win of the event.
The much anticipated clash between Carlsen and Anand was worthy of the occasion, with Carlsen building up a promising position. However, just as it seemed that Maggie was about to convert his advantage it dissipated in just a few moves and Anand escaped.
An entertaining round was capped by a fighting game between Gashimov and Wang Yue which ended with bare kings on the board.
The standings after seven rounds:
Carlsen, Magnus | 2826 | 5 |
Bacrot, Etienne | 2716 | 4 |
Anand, Viswanathan | 2800 | 4 |
Topalov, Veselin | 2803 | 3 |
Gashimov, Vugar | 2719 | 3 |
Wang Yue | 2732 | 2 |
In round eight Anand will have white against Topalov, Bacrot faces Gashimov, and Wang Yue plays Carlsen.
