Beijing Grand Prix Starts Thursday

Only a week after the Tal Memorial has finished, chess fans can enjoy another super strong tournament: the 5th FIDE Grand Prix. It starts on Thursday in Beijing, China and has Boris Gelfand, Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, Vassily Ivanchuk, Gata Kamsky, Sergey Karjakin, Peter Leko, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Alexander Morozevich, Veselin Topalov, Wang Hao and Wang Yue as participants.

The 5th Grand Prix is organized by FIDE and the Chinese Chess Federation and takes place 4-16 July, 2013 in China's capital. As always it's a 12-player round robin, with 11 rounds and 2 rest days (July 8 and 13).

The time control is 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes to finish the game. After the second time control the players get 30 seconds per move, so from move 61 onwards. The players will divide a prize fund of 170,000 Euros.

The FIDE Grand Prix Series 2012-2013 consists of six tournaments in total; Beijing is the fifth. Here are the top results of the previous tournaments:

  2. November 2012, Tashkent (Uzbekistan): 1-3. Sergey Karjakin, Wang Hao, Alexander Morozevich
  3. April 2013, Zug (Switzerland): 1. Veselin Topalov 2. Hikaru Nakamura 3-4. Ruslan Ponomariov, Fabiano Caruana
  4. May-June in Thessaloniki (Greece): 1. Leinier Dominguez 2-3. Fabiano Caruana, Gata Kamsky

18 top players were selected to compete in these tournament, and each player participates in four of the six. The winner and second placed player overall of the Grand Prix series will qualify for the Candidates Tournament, to be held in March 2014. Below are the current standings:
