The 45th edition of the Capablanca Memorial tournament in memory of the third world champion is underway in Havana.

The tournament format is the increasingly popular six-player double round-robin, with the top two Cuban players Leinier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon flying the flag for their homeland.

However, after three rounds it is top seed Vassily Ivanchuk (pictured) who leads with 2.5 points thanks to early wins against Short and Alekseev.

The current standings:

 Ivanchuk, Vassily   UKR  2741 2.5
Dominguez Perez, Leinier  CUB  2713 1.5
Bruzon Batista, Lazaro  CUB  2668 1.5
 Nepomniachtchi, Ian  RUS  2695 1.5
 Alekseev, Evgeny  RUS  2700 1.0
 Short, Nigel D  ENG  2685 1.0

The tournament is the 'Elite' showpiece event of a bigger chess festival which includes a 10-player single round-robin 'Premier' and a 9 round Swiss Open. The festival runs until the 22 June and there is coverage (in Spanish) here.

Ivanchuk's wins are the only decisive games of the Elite tournament so far.
