Magnus Carlsen got off to a flying start in Nanjing to lead the Pearl Spring Masters after the first round.

Carlsen quickly gained the upper hand against experienced Etienne Bacrot and the game finished quickly in the Frenchman's time trouble.

With Anand and Topalov both failing to make good use of the white pieces, Carlsen is the sole leader after round one.  But the real test will start tomorrow, when Carlsen has black against Anand. Who is primus inter pares?
