Carlsen Wins Again To Take Lead In Bilbao
Another stunning victory for Magnus Carlsen (pictured) propelled him to the top of the standings in the Grand Slam Final in Bilbao after the other games were drawn.
Carlsen sacrificed first one pawn and then another against Lev Aronian in a thrilling encounter. The first sac was known theory, but the second was a novelty which created complications which the Armenian failed to adequately answer. An eventual oversight led to Aronian losing his rook and the game.
Veselin Topalov seemed to hold all the cards against Teimour Radjabov's King's Indian Defence, but miraculously Radjabov clung on to survive in an epic tussle. The game between Vassily Ivanchuk and Vishy Anand was, by contrast, a rather dour draw.
The standings after round 6:
1 | Carlsen, Magnus | NOR | 2775 | 11 |
